My Favourite Film!

We all have that one film that we carry with us, the answer to the question ‘What is your favourite film?’ For some that answer comes easily, it is one they have known for years; for others, like me, it proves to be a lot harder.

I have long been passionate about film and have spent many hours sat in front of screen engrossed in stories, transported to different lands, different times and captivated by different characters. How do you pick a favourite film, out of a sea of so many?

In truth its simple, when I really thought about it, it’s not about how many Oscars it has, or how visionary the director was,  Your favourite film should be the one with which you have the greatest connection. Therefore, deciding on my favourite film is easy, it’s The Princess Bride.

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Even though it has been nearly 30 years since it was released in 1987 (six years before I was born) and the effects seem a little dated in comparison to the modern world of CGI, it is a film that stands the test of time. I fell in love with the characters and the story the very first time I saw it. From the endearing love that bonds Wesley and Buttercup, to the friendship between Inigo and Fezzick, The Princess Bride is a film that grabs your heartstrings and tugs. Romance, comedy and action are deftly woven together to create a story that grips its audience, with impressive swordfights, complicated riddles and daring rescue missions, centred around a love between a boy and girl.

Yet, for me the reason The Princess Bride is my favourite film, is my Dad. He was the one who first introduced me to Dread Pirate Roberts and Princess Buttercup. It became a film we bonded over, and one which we repeatedly quote at one another (inconceivable!) My love for The Princess Bride is tied up in the love for my Dad, which makes its emotional connection to me, powerfully strong, strong enough to make it my favourite film!

Elle, this is a lovely piece! I’m going to see if I can find this film to watch as it has been eons since I last saw it.
