TV Preview – Supergirl

It is safe to say that Superheroes are in, but can the same be said for Superheroines?

On paper CBS’s Supergirl appears promising, especially as it is being produced by Greg Berlanti, the co-creator of and producer of Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (to be discussed in a later post!)

But…  I’m not convinced!

The biggest problem is the trailer makes me far more interested in the elusive Superman, her cousin, who is already up to his usual saving the world activities. For me the problem lies with the characterisation of Supergirl, who comes across as an insubstantial, girly girl, lacking in confidence and subdued. Perhaps as the series progresses this will change, it’s worth remembering this is just a snippet of the first episode, and I hope it will. I’d rather watch a programme about a woman who is strong, tough and caring, albeit with some vulnerabilities, someone who can more than hold her own in a testosterone filled world!

I believe that a programme, or even a film, focused on a female superhero can work, if it is done right.  There has been a lot of progress over recent years to back this up just look at Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even Berlanti has experience with Black Canary in Arrow. I’m just not sure that Supergirl is going to be the one to make it!
