Animated movies seem to be taking over, they’re everywhere!
The latest to take the Box Office by storm is Disney Pixar’s Inside Out.
Perfectly summed up by its tagline, “a major emotion picture”, the films main characters are Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.
Living inside the head of 11-year-old Riley, their worlds are rocked when Riley’s parents move the family from lovely Minnesota to scary San Francisco.
The film is ambitious and for a children’s film, its comments on the importance of emotion and social interaction are both grown up and enlightening.
For the most part it’s a good film, but… it’s also a film with problems.
The middle section in particular, is slow, repetitive and frustrating. If the film had been twenty minutes shorter, it probably would have been stronger.
The film biggest weakness is it shies away from its strongest element; those moments when the audience gets the chance to see the emotions inside other character’s heads.
This is particularly effective during a family dinner scene, where we get to see the Mum & Dad’s emotions and the differences and similarities between them and Riley.
Unfortunately there just aren’t enough of these moments, as well as the family dinner scene this is only used in the final moments of the film, and personally, I feel the filmmakers have missed something by not using this more.
If I am being honest I was left feeling disappointed by the film, it certainly isn’t the worst animated film I’ve seen, but it didn’t grab me in the way others have.
Some might argue that I am too old for the film and that has affected my opinion, and there might be some truth to that. However it is also true that The Lego Movie and Minions are two of my favourite films to have come out in the past twelve months.
