Adventures: MCM Comic Con London

If I’m going to do something then I’m going to do it right. After all there’s no such thing as a half measures. That was the attitude I had for my weekend in London last month which combined both my film/television and NFL passions with a visit to MCM Comic Con on the Saturday and the NFL International Series on the Sunday.

It was way too early in the morning when I and my fellow travellers made our way to the train station to begin our comic adventures. Excitable and suitably attired in geeky t-shirts (Supernatural, Chuck and Galaxy Quest) we began the journey to London.

The pre-dawn start may have been painful for the group but the benefits of priority entry (9am) for MCM Comic Con at London’s Excel Centre was worth it. With 2 hours before the doors open to the general public you are able to move relatively freely among the stalls in both exhibition halls as you hunt down the perfect (and cheapest) collectables.

With stalls having been perused and the purchases already stacking up our attention turned to the day’s schedule of talks. Our first endeavour proved fruitless as Boogie Storm, the dancing Stormtroopers from Britain’s Got Talent, missed their slot.

So it was back to the drawing board for attempt two, which thankfully proved successful. Michael Landes (The Adventures of Lois & Clark; Upstairs, Downstairs) was discussing his new adventure series Hooten and the Lady. He is one lucky actor as the filming locations for this project, Rome, Cambodia, South Africa, all sounded amazing.

Michael’s insights into his experiences on The Adventures of Lois & Clark were both interesting and funny. Despite being the first person cast, Michael was fired after the first season due to his similarity in appearance to the show’s lead’s Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain. As he pointed out none of them had changed their looks from episode 1 to 22 so he’s not sure why it suddenly became a problem.

As interesting as Michael was my highlight of the day was, without a doubt, The Musketeer’s Panel with Howard Charles (Porthos) and Tamla Kari (Constance). I loved the show when it aired on the BBC and was one of an army of fans  frustrated at the corporation’s treatment of it and sad when it was cancelled earlier this year after 3 series.

Charles and Kari were on fine form answering questions about the show, some seriously, others not so much. When asked who else they would have like to have played on the show, Charles expressed his desire to play Constance. Not just because she was a kick-ass female character but because she got to make out with Luke Pasqualino’s D’Artagnan.

The only problem with the panel was that it was over far too quickly. 40 minutes just wasn’t long enough…the actors had more to say and the audience had many more questions.

After a final look around the stalls and a few last minute purchases it was time to bid farewell. Following a quick pitstop at the 02 Cineworld to see Jack Reacher: Never Go Back it was time to get ready for the NFL.
